Obtaining a driver’s license is a process that includes several steps. If you have completed your training and have held a learner’s license for at least ten months, it is time to take the SAAQ theory test. Once you have met this challenge, you will only have to pass the practical test to get your hands on a probationary license. These two assessments are not to be taken lightly. After all, your future freedom depends on it…

The theoretical exam

The questionnaire that the SAAQ gives to each learner driver covers a host of topics ranging from driving to road signs, through regulations and sharing the road. It contains 64 multiple-choice questions, including several illustrated scenarios that students must analyze. Which vehicles are at fault in the following example? What does this road sign indicate? To whom must the driver yield the right of way? You guessed it: this 60-minute test requires excellent knowledge of the Highway Code and careful preparation. Be sure to pay attention to the material taught to you during your theoretical training, complete the required readings and do not hesitate to ask questions to clarify certain points.

When you feel ready, all you have to do is register directly with the SAAQ to take the exam.

Those who aspire to the practical test must have passed the SAAQ theory exam, have held a learner’s permit for at least 12 months and have completed their training in a driving school recognized by the Association québécoise des transports. . Once these conditions have been met, you can make an appointment with the SAAQ to complete this final step before obtaining your probationary licence. As no vehicle is provided for the occasion, you must ensure that the car you choose is in good condition: it will also be evaluated during the examination. If you do not have a suitable vehicle, you can always rent one.

During the exam, keep calm and avoid distractions. Now is the time to turn off your cell phone! The duration of the practical test is approximately 60 minutes during which the evaluator will measure your ability to react to different situations, hence the importance of not neglecting the practice. You have a year to master driving in different contexts: make good use of it. Drive on the highway, in town, in the countryside, near a school… The more experienced you are, the more confident you will feel during the exam. It’s up to you to take up the challenge!
